Small Continentals have never been the cleanest of engines, particularly in the engine breather department, from where an oil mist is deposited on to the underside of the fuselage and wing centre section. Once coated in that thin mist of oil, the surface, now quite sticky, attracts dirt and grime from field, runway and hangar floor. The resultant deposit is unsightly, abrasive and a chore to remove.
Not relishing the thought of cleaning off this mess too regularly, we came up with a novel idea to stop the oil mist ever escaping from the crankcase. We call it our Crankcase Breather Kit. It is quick and easy to fit, and uses gravity and the cooling effect of the airflow to return any escaping oil mist to the crankcase. Not only did it instantly eliminate that dreadful mess, it reduced the oil consumption by 75%, yes 75%. The first trip we did after fitting it was to Prague via Luxembourg. We took with us 4 litres of oil and brought 3 litres back!
